Daman- a pristine escape from monotony
While most tourists go to Goa and Kerala beaches, you can choose a different spot to holiday amongst the waters. On the western coast of India, lies a small union territory of Daman and Diu, which reflects the Portuguese rule amidst the breath taking, serene beaches .
Since Daman lies on the Gujarat- Maharashtra border, it exhibits the culture of both the states, giving the tourists a lot to explore. The culture in Daman is a fusion of the Indian, tribal and Portuguese culture. Apart from Kerala and Goa, this is one place where you can discover the Portuguese imprints on Indian soil.
The climate and the beaches are enthralling. The climate is pleasant throughout the year although the best time to visit is November to February. On the other hand, the beaches are virgins, with very less tourists visiting them. Hence, they are still pristine and serene- a perfect place to search peace and break away from the world. The Jampore Beach, the Devka Beach and the Nagoa Beach are the beaches that you can visit and experience the joy of tranquility. You can throw your fatigue and enjoy the sand and sun.
The Devka beach must be visited at sunset to experience the damp, black rocks glowing red in the sun. The conch shells and sea breeze are something that you will come across in your entire journey at Daman making your visit enchanting. Although these beaches are perfect for family vacations, they are also a perfect destination to just be with your inner self away from responsibilities for a while so that while eventually stepping back into the rat race you can feel vigorous and joyful. The splashing sea waves will soak your fatigue in. The Moti Daman beach is a must visit for history-lovers, who want to capture the Portugal-style forts and churches.
Nani Daman is a busy sweet and chaat lane and food lovers can explore the Daman specials. The Damao Pequeno Jetty is a popular fast food center. The St. Jerome Fort built in 1627 by the Portuguese is another attraction. While visiting these places, you can also enjoy a boat ride.
Daman offers delicious cuisines ranging from seafood and meat; chicken xacuti, dharafish fry, butter-garlic tiger prawns and fish squid being the specialties. The vegetarians need not worry as there are restaurants for the veggies also.
Besides the beaches, travelers can also visit the Mirasol and Vaibhav Water World that includes party grounds, giant water rides, wave pool, children’s pool, boating, toy trains and restaurants.
The shoppers can pick their choose from the Arcade market and the Maharaja market. But the items would include clothes and shoes, which are generally available everywhere and are not a peculiarity. If you are really looking for something authentic, then you must buy conch shells.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport is about 192 kms. From there, visitors can hire taxis to Daman beach. Vapi is the closest railway station located about 10 kms away from Daman.
While exploring other beaches, do not miss the ones in this small territory. A perfect combination of serenity, inner peace and beauty- Daman!
