Kelve Beach, Maharashtra
Kelve or Kelva beach is the ideal weekend destination for local backpacking for Mumbaities and other travelers looking at a break from the jostles of a fast paced city life. Here at Kelve you can treat yourself to a long stretch of beach lined up against the Arabian Sea. In all it is a beautiful yet accessible place.
Considering that is beach is far from commercialized, the tourist crowd there is comparatively feeble and hence makes for a peaceful stay. In spite of being a beach expanse, the adjoining land is peppered by plenty of Suru trees. Another notable aspect about the beach here is its clean waters, unlike many of the other Indian beaches. All these factors make it a perfect place for a romantic getaway.
Your stay at this beach is a good time to connect with your spiritual self. The Sitladevi temple is a Hindu shrine. It is said that the temple marks the abode of Lord Ram’s twins Luv and Kush during Sita’s second exile. The place also homes two notable forts at the two ends of the Kelve Beach; one at the southern end and the other, a comparatively smaller one, at the northern end.
How do I get there?
If you plan on driving down to Palghar from Mumbai, then it’s an 80 km drive that you’re taking up on. Palghar in itself is 35 kilometers off the main highway. You can either turn at the saphale phata from the western expressway where the route is short but the roads are a mess or turn left to Palaghar Phata at Manor which accounts for a route that scales 30 kms more than the former but the roads are good.
The train ride upto Kelve station from Bombay is as an hour long affair. The beach is 5 kms from Kelve station which can be covered both by foot or an adventurous 8 seater auto ride.
Where do I stay?
The best place to put up during your short stay at Kelve would the Kelva Beach Resort sited behind the Sitladevi temple. This resort is all about rustic bamboo cottages and log huts. The added facilities at the resort consist of a swimming pool, restaurant, badminton court, provision for cycling, billiards, pool, carom, chess and cards. Moreover, the resort is a mere 200 meters away from the beach. Besides this, there are other budget hotels and inns around the beach.
What do I carry?
Carry your beach clothes, camera to snap some breathtaking landscapes, two towels (Because no matter how hard you try, you’re bound to catch all the sand), sun screen and our glares.
