Shopping in Ahmedabad

Founded in the early 1400′s, Ahmedabad has a vibrant cultural history which has been heavily influenced by the Mughals, the British and local tribes. This former capital of the state of Gujarat has a lot to offer for tourists, specially in terms of shopping.

Being one of the important metro cities of India, Ahmedabad is connected by Air, road and rail. There are more than a few tourist spots in the city and an equal number of shopping districts in Ahmedabad.

The city is known for its exquisite jewelery, eclectic varieties of antiques and dazzling handlooms and garments. Ahmadabad is a collector’s paradise and because it is a tourist destination, one can find loads of trinkets for a good price.

The ‘Teen Darwaza’ market in Ahmedabad is one of the most famous shopping districts of the city. This place is known to be the hub for antiques and wood works. Here, shoppers can browse through  traditional hand crafted jewelery, aesthetic showpieces and hand made furniture. Make sure to check in multiple shops and leave room for bargaining as the shop owners quote prices that keeping the bargain factor in mind.

Another place where one can find beautiful collectibles for house decoration is the C.G. Road Market. Earthenware pottery, which is sourced from rural Gujarat can be found over here. These items are made in the traditional manner which gives them a sense of exclusivity.

Ahmadabad’s C.G. Road is also famous for its variety of cloth shops which sell Bandhani, Patola and Bandhej fabrics; a specialty of Gujarat. Make sure to enter the big shops as the material you find there are authentic, many smaller shops may sell spurious material.

The Dhal Garwad market is another popular destination for cloth shopping. Apart from a large offering of fabrics at decent prices, this place also offers authentic silver jewelery. But again, make sure to check the quality of silver before purchasing, as it is an extremely costly metal.
